Most habits are easier to break than they are to form. One habit that needs to be broken is eating away from the table. Eating while distracted, in front of the television, is a surefire method to ensure overeating and subsequent weight gain.

It is important to separate food from pleasure as often as possible.  Associating food with entertainment is what leads us to eat during times of boredom.  Obviously there are times when food is part of a social event and certainly should be enjoyed but it is important to limit these activities to special occasions.

If you have gotten in the habit of curling up on the couch with your favorite snack to watch a movie or are in the habit of eating dinner while watching your favorite television show, it is time to stop. These are bad habits that will only deteriorate your health and increase your disappointment that next time you step on the scale.

If you would like to go to the other extreme, you can negatively reinforce eating by creating an uncomfortable dining experience. I don't encourage people to start a fight with their spouse during dinner but instead try eating your next meal standing up.  The only danger here is that you may be inclined to try to eat faster.  Don't do this.  Eating fast can lead to over consumption. It takes time for digested food to raise nutrient levels in the bloodstream to signal the brain that enough food has been ingested. When you eat fast, far more food enters your body before the signal occurs.

Fighting the battle of the bulge is never easy and requires many different strategies to ensure success.  I hope this tool assists you towards your goal.
