If you are interested in losing weight, I have some great news.  How would you like a supplement that is all natural, has no side effects(other than the positive effects it produces for your health), and is inexpensive? You'll be surprised to learn that the supplement is one in which you are already familiar.  Interestingly enough, it isn't famous as a dietary supplement but instead as a hokey gift idea.

The supplement is the Ch.. Ch.. Ch..Chia. Yes, amazingly the Chia pet (which is made from the Chia seed) isn't just a novel gift idea but is also a great dietary supplement.  The Chia seed, from Mexico, was utilized by the Aztec Indians as a food to sustain their warriors during times of war.  The Chia seed is considered a super food.  It has twice as much potassium as a banana, six times as much magnesium as broccoli, and is a great antioxidant.

That's all well and good that the Chia seed is a health food but how does that help me to lose weight?  Interestingly enough, when digested, the Chia seed expands to 10 times its size forming a gelatinous, high fiber substance.  Because of these characteristics, your stomach volume is decreased (the same basic concept as the lap band). Because there is less volume in your stomach, you'll be discouraged from consuming as much food.

If you're worried about the gelatinous mass that is formed in your stomach from the Chia seed – don't.  This high fiber substance is not only safe but it's helpful to your digestive tract.  It's high fiber nature will help keep your digestive system clean.

This is a substance that many people are finding extremely helpful in curbing their appetites.  Dr. Oz even mentions it in his latest book. Perhaps best of all, the Chia seed is extremely affordable.  You can get it approximately 5 pounds of seeds for approximately $20.  Considering the fact that you only need to take about two tablespoons a day, $20 worth of Chia seeds will last you four to five months.  I challenge you to find a cheaper dietary supplement.

In next week's blog, I'll discuss the best way to consume the Chia seed.
